Virtual volunteering is a relatively new concept that is gaining wide popularity as you can offer your services to non profit organizations all over the world from the comfort of your home. All you require is an internet connection and a home or work computer.

One may opt for virtual volunteering due to time constraints, inability to commute, disabilities or personal preferences. Through virtual volunteering you may offer your expertise to hospitals, schools, government organizations and non profit organizations. It is not necessary that virtual means only online, the person may work virtually as well as in direct communication, it varies according to people’s preferences.

While volunteering virtually it depends on what is your area of expertise. If you are a freelance writer you may offer to write content for these websites or write proposals or any writing job. In case you are a doctor and would like to work virtually there are a number of websites willing to hire your services wherein you can enter chat menus and speak to patients online. You may opt for data entry, filling forms, recording CD’s for the blind and so on. Virtual volunteering is truly a boon to those who have a desire to work online and cannot commute. You may also be a volunteer by rendering prayer support online; speaking in chat menus, be a virtual assistant…the list is truly endless.

Let us assume you are in a totally new country due to your spouse’s job and you are highly qualified though not as per the norms of the country you have moved into. It is a difficult situation and you are desperate to find work and you have no idea where to begin. Do not panic, volunteering is the best option for you and it has yielded results or many and will do wonders for you. As you volunteer you can acquire training and knowledge that is recognized in the place you are residing and with those credentials you may be offered a paid job.

In such situations it becomes very important to develop a strong network with people you meet because each one of them may be instrumental in finding you your dream job. As you volunteer you will meet all kinds of people from different communities and walks of life. Be friendly to all and be sure to make a lasting impact, so always warmly introduce yourself and let them know what you are interested in. You may need to pay special attention to building relationships or otherwise it may not happen. The more people you positively interact with increases your chances of finding the kind of work you are looking for.

Do not miss any chance to network, the reason being that every new person you meet through your voluntary work whether it is a supplier, client or a supervisor may be your pathway to a brighter career opportunity.
