At the end of each day when you just look back at how the day was spent do you feel a sense of satisfaction or is it the same old routine? Life is just moving on and lots of things are happening around you and you are vexed …you really would like to do something worthwhile. It is very important to find peace and happiness in life and believe me; you get a lot of satisfaction and a sense of achievement when you volunteer.

There are numerous benefits of being a volunteer firstly you tend to meet a lot of new people, you learn new skills, you tend to be interested in a lot of things and you have a sense of being a part and parcel of the community and the society as a whole. You have the satisfaction of being a responsible citizen contributing to the well being of the Nation and if you are a global volunteer contributing to the cause of peace and well being in the world.

By volunteering you grow personally in the sense that you increase your social awareness, gain a lot of self confidence, become independent, expand your contacts, discover your talents and strong points and learn a lot through service. As a volunteer you also gain work experience and attract potential employers who get impressed with your voluntary work. Unknown to you, you begin developing a job finding network and you will have a really strong resume in hand. You actually get much more than you invest…it is a wonderful thing to do so do not miss it.

Employee volunteeringThe corporate world also owes a lot to society and needs to give back what they have received and obviously the best possible way is volunteering. It does not really matter if you are an entrepreneur or a very large organization, it is very essential to have an employee volunteer program An employee volunteer program should be simple, understandable and in line with the company’s mission statement. When you choose activities that are closely aligned with the company’s giving mission statement, great benefits are generated for the company, the employees and also the community as a whole. You will have to develop a program structure and define policies clearly so that the program is focused and manageable. The company needs to decide on how much time and money can be invested in the volunteering activity.

You would need to clearly state to your employees your volunteer efforts so that enthusiasm is instilled and there is good will formed within the community. Also keep in mind that this is an indirect way of maintaining smooth public relations and marketing your company. Reward the employees who involve and take interest and appreciate their effort. When you have a recognition program others are also inspired to take it up and venture. Finally it is very important to evaluate because without that you will never know whether the exercise was successful. You may evaluate based on employee feedback i.e. their satisfaction about the program and whether it meets your overall mission.

Just imagine a little child suffering from a complex heart disease about which doctors have virtually given up hope but are trying their very best at the same time. He lies there cheerful and happy not knowing what is going on surrounded by disturbed parents and relations. Does not your heart go out to help…to just brighten his day by playing with him or telling stories or even raising funds for a very expensive surgery. If that child survives the trauma and comes out healthy would not the joy be tremendous but even if the outcome is disappointing, you will have the satisfaction that you did your best.

Volunteering for hospitals is a very satisfying job and you will have many opportunities available. You may even use it on your resume or college application as proof that you are a compassionate and caring person. If you need a reference like that, you may ask for a letter of recommendation from your volunteer supervisor. You may call or visit your local hospital to find out about their volunteer program and probably fill an application and a background check would be done. After approval you may sign up for volunteer shifts as per your convenience. You may also provide dolls or blankets for deserving patients and could also plan a one day visit as a group or with your family to brighten someone’s day. The stress of illness is truly very frustrating and the aid of volunteers is really appreciated and gratefully accepted. If you can put a smile of hope on a saddened face…the satisfaction you receive is truly invaluable.

You are at the crossroads…you need to get focused in your career and begin working. You have a number of student loans to close so you only feel like going for paid jobs. But in many cases paid jobs may not come along unless you have sufficient experience. It is always a wise thing to do some volunteering or take up an internship with an INTERNSHIPorganization so that you can show it in your resume and let people know about your talents and capabilities. It is an added bonus to your resume so even a period of 6 months should do, you could work during your last semester and then show it in your resume. A bit of planning and focus could ensure you get a job once you are fresh out of college.

Internships are generally taken up by students who need experience in a specific field or for those who want to switch careers. Generally intern students are hired as replacements and may work for a very less pay or no pay at all. Internships actually offer a lot of education, learning and experience in a specific field which you can show in your resume. There are several types of internships and they are many times volunteering opportunities. There may be paid internships too but do not hesitate if you get an unpaid one only because it will give you the same expertise and experience and the prospects of a better job. Internship can be termed as a pre-employment opportunity wherein you get a feel of what work in the real world is like.

virtual volunteering picThe world has truly become small because of technology advancement and things we never even would have imagined 50 years back, we cannot live without them today. Virtual volunteering is a relatively new concept that is gaining wide popularity as you can offer your services to non profit organizations all over the world from the comfort of your home. All you require is an internet connection and a home or work computer.

One may opt for virtual volunteering due to time constraints, inability to commute, disabilities or personal preferences. Through virtual volunteering you may offer your expertise to hospitals, schools, government organizations and non profit organizations. It is not necessary that virtual means only online, the person may work virtually as well as in direct communication, it varies according to people’s preferences.

While volunteering virtually it depends on what is your area of expertise. If you are a freelance writer you may offer to write content for these websites or write proposals or any writing job. In case you are a doctor and would like to work virtually there are a number of websites willing to hire your services wherein you can enter chat menus and speak to patients online. You may opt for data entry, filling forms, recording CD’s for the blind and so on. Virtual volunteering is truly a boon to those who have a desire to work online and cannot commute. You may also be a volunteer by rendering prayer support online; speaking in chat menus, be a virtual assistant…the list is truly endless.

You love traveling and seeing new people and also you enjoy learning new languages. You love seeing the beautiful historic places all over the globe and you are truly enthralled at beautiful scenic sights all over the world. At the same time you are aware of the hardships that many persons in the underdeveloped nations are suffering and your heart goes out to them. It may not be sufficient to just express compassion but you can take some time off and offer to volunteer abroad. Volunteering abroad is generally associated with social causes like rescue work during natural calamities like earthquakes, war, Tsunami, creating eco friendly habitats, teaching slum children etc. Do you really gain something…yes a lot of experience, a good understanding of different cultures, traditions, languages and a sense of satisfaction and pride about contributing globally.

The types of volunteering opportunities available abroad are teaching English to underprivileged children, helping in procurement of good drinking water for the village as a whole or even caring for rare species of birds and other wild life in nature reserves. You may feed the hungry in homeless shelters during natural calamities, help the sick in hospitals if you are a medical practitioner or a nurse and probably just show love and compassion to children in need. The need is truly great out there probably much more than you can actually imagine so think about it, if you truly have the inclination and the strength to bear any hardships that you may encounter this will be a road to a bright career and future for you.

Let us assume you are in a totally new country due to your spouse’s job and you are highly qualified though not as per the norms of the country you have moved into. It is a difficult situation and you are desperate to find work and you have no idea where to begin. Do not panic, volunteering is the best option for you and it has yielded results or many and will do wonders for you. As you volunteer you can acquire training and knowledge that is recognized in the place you are residing and with those credentials you may be offered a paid job.

In such situations it becomes very important to develop a strong network with people you meet because each one of them may be instrumental in finding you your dream job. As you volunteer you will meet all kinds of people from different communities and walks of life. Be friendly to all and be sure to make a lasting impact, so always warmly introduce yourself and let them know what you are interested in. You may need to pay special attention to building relationships or otherwise it may not happen. The more people you positively interact with increases your chances of finding the kind of work you are looking for.

SOCIAL NETWORK

Do not miss any chance to network, the reason being that every new person you meet through your voluntary work whether it is a supplier, client or a supervisor may be your pathway to a brighter career opportunity.

Volunteering may seem to some as a service to society for which they do not derive any benefit. volunteerYou may feel why waste my time, energy and resources when I am not going to get anything in return. But that is not the case. Whatever the volunteering opportunity be, you are definitely benefited in several ways. The first reason why a person should offer to volunteer is because all that we have and are is by the grace of God and the more you give, the more you will receive. If you are at a crossroad and looking for some good job opportunity you may offer to volunteer for some time so that someone seeing your skills and expertise may offer you a good paid job.

You may volunteer in your free time. If you are free during weekends or evenings or your job gives you some time off, you may volunteer to do something for society. It depends on what you love to do and where you have the inclination. Volunteering to be precise comes from the heart, so do something very close to your heart, something you always longed to do but could not accomplish in your regular job. The satisfaction you derive from doing good is worth millions of dollars and the joy you see on a person for whom you willingly worked is really worth the effort. You actually feel nice about yourself and have the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile. Otherwise we just go on with our regular routine and do not stop to think of others…volunteering gives you an opportunity to think of others, serve society and as you pass through this life only once you make sure you are remembered warmly and with all respect.

Just imagine a world where no one volunteered…think of what would have happened if after the Tsunami hit the coasts of Asia, nobody bothered and everyone refused to help, if there were no voluntary doctors, no voluntary help rendered. It would truly have been a sad state of affairs. Volunteering has become a part and parcel of society and it is truly unimaginable to think of a world without it.

Let us consider some scenarios without volunteers. If there were no volunteer coaches or organizers, social and sport activities would be largely affected and there probably would be no sporting events, rugby matches, athletics, no Olympic games, the list is surely endless. Without voluntary fund raisers and organizers would it be possible to host music events, pop concerts or festivals? Imagine what we would do without the free medical advice available to people around the world with so many doctors volunteering? People would die in large numbers if we never had the Red Cross, cave and mountain rescue teams and the Samaritans. We may not have such a beautiful environment if people refused to volunteer and landscape, beautiful places and wildlife would surely be neglected. Huge numbers of old and disabled people and destitute children would be lonely and depressed.

Volunteering is important also because it helps you personally. Volunteering helps to alleviate stress helps you enjoy good health since you have a sense of achievement and satisfaction and studies have even proved that you get a peaceful night’s rest.

It was a bright day, all seemed great…but then I saw a little child peeping through the window of a toy shop with eager eyes looking at that lovely doll…I knew she could not buy it, but I could and then I found myself counting notes over the counter and believe me the ecstasy on that little face was invaluable…worth millions of dollars. This may not be called volunteering but is a small act of kindness to a little girl and when you commit your time, energy and resources to help and provide support to people in need and to organizations with no financial benefit to yourself it is called volunteering.

You may also say that by volunteering you express your citizenship and your commitment to the society as a whole. You commit your time and your energy for the benefit of society and the community as a whole. Volunteering is generally undertaken freely and by personal choice without any concern for financial gain. Volunteering may include a wide range of activities like self help, charity, citizenship, community service, public service, environmental awareness, trustee, member and helper.

volunteers!

Each one sees the act of volunteering in a different way…some feel they are doing an act of kindness, some feel that they should set things in place in society and still others do it to gain new skills and increase job prospects. Whatever it is, volunteering is a noble act where you part with your services free of charge with the goal of brightening someone else’s life or doing something good to society.
